Essay / Religion and Moby Dick - 3608
Religion and Moby DickJob was a man of the purest faith. When the world shunned God, Job's faith never waned. Job was a rich and handsome man, with a beautiful wife and many possessions. At one point, Satan made a bet with God that if Job's circumstances changed, his faith would quickly falter. On that note, God took Job's wealth, his possessions, his family, and his wife. When times were at their worst, God gave Job marks of pus on Job's face, taking his look. However, Job's faith did not weaken, but became stronger. Job passed the test. God then healed Job, gave him more land, more wealth, and a better wife. Job was disconcerted, wondering the purpose of his fall and rise. When he asked God this question, God responded, “…Because I am God.” That was answer enough. In contrast, Jonah was a man whom God called to become a prophet. Jonah refused because he did not want a life of servitude. Knowing that he had committed the ultimate sin, Jonah fled to the ocean, risking the lives of hundreds of crew members, believing that God could not follow him. In the sea, Jonah was swallowed by God in the form of a whale. In the belly of the whale he repented and prayed for forgiveness. He was spat out by the whale onto dry land and all was forgiven. Man fears God. God created all life and all matter, he maintained them and he can very easily take them back. Man realizes this, and those who have the purest faith must pay a lifetime of tribute and servitude. At least this is the key to all religions believing in God. In part of the Hindu faith, there is a God called Shiva. He is believed to be the “restorer and destroyer of worlds”. Shiva is one of the most capricious gods in all religions, he will destroy the world on a whim. At one point, he even cut off his son's head and turned it into an elephant's face. An example of the type of faith Shiva needed is found in the story of a man who desired power more than anything. In order to obtain this power, he had to obtain sacred weapons created by Shiva. He began deep meditation to obtain the weapons. This continued until his meditation darkened the skies and angered Shiva himself..
