1.0 IntroductionA golf ball is a spherical ball with dimples on the surface specially designed for use in a game of “golf”. The material currently used for the central body is rubber. Polybutediene rubber is a synthetic rubber that is strong but elastic like the properties of tires, which is why most of the ball speed is due to the properties of the rubber core. The inner cover of the golf ball is usually made of surlyn, but sometimes surlyn is also made. on the outer cover of the golf ball. Surlyn is a less expensive ionomer material that is soft, has excellent resilience and is resistant to cuts and abrasion. Balata, a type of natural rubber, is sometimes used to construct the inner cover layer. Balata is less resistant to cuts and has a low turnover rate. The outer cover of the golf ball is made of thermoplastic polyurethane, thermoplastic polyurethane is a kind of urethane, the toughness and hardness can be controlled easily. Thermoplastic becomes soft when heated, allowing for greater design precision and flexibility. Sometimes Srixon (a type of urethane) is used because it is softer for more spin without sacrificing durability. In addition to this, it is resistant to abrasion, cutting and tearing with easily controlled toughness and hardness. The surfaces of the golf ball were not smooth; there are many dimples on its surface. The function of the dimples is to reduce air resistance and improve the flight length of the golf ball. Dimples will affect the lift of the golf ball, the spinning action of the golf ball after hitting will create higher air pressure on the bottom of the ball than the air pressure on the top; this imbalance between lower and upper pressure causes an upward force on the ball, the ball moves up and further, the dimples help optimize the lift force...... middle of paper ..... .&A) and the United States Golf Association (USGA). Both bodies had specified that the maximum golf ball weight was 45.9 g, but the golf ball diameter specifications for the two bodies were different; which are as follows: The minimum diameter is 41.15 mm for R&A; The minimum diameter is 42.67 mm for USGA1.2 Objective 1.2.1 Investigate possible materials to make a golf ball. 1.2.2 Maximize the weight of the golf ball with a minimum size allowed by R&A and USGA.1.3 Scope of the study1.3.1 Types of golf ball: Three-piece golf ball1.3.2 Materials used to produce the golf ball are: Core - Polybutediene rubber; Inside cover - Surlyn; Exterior cover - Thermoplastic polyurethane; andDimple pattern - hexagonal based dimple pattern.1.3.3 The methods used to make a golf ball: forming, polishing, painting, coating, finishing, drying and packaging.
