Latin American women: objectified as products in a male-dominated cultureIn Prida's “Beautiful Señoritas,” Latin American women are products rather than people, but attempt to find their humanity through creating connections with an “ocean” of Latin American female community. The opening lines of the play “Beautiful Senoritas” feature the feminist voice of Dolores Prida. Written in the 1970s, this piece of literature reflects the women's rights movement and takes up the theme of the liberation of many female writers during that decade. “Beautiful Señoritas” is a play that depicts feminist oppression, amplifying the lack of civil rights for Latina women. Although women's rights are recognized in the United States, women in Latin America remain oppressed by male domination. In Prida's play, she highlights this oppression but also the stereotypical gender roles of women. In a society where women are considered inferior to men, masochism reigns. Masculinity assumes that men are the most valuable sex in the world: smarter, more problem-solving, and more hard-working. It also assumes that women are best led by men: should women follow and obey their husbands. In “Beautiful Señoritas,” the masochism remains strong. Even today, in parts of the Latin world, there are men invested in masculine views, these extremes of superiority are seen in characters like Don José. The United States is a global leader in women's rights and equality, and many cultures and nationalities lag far behind in recognizing women's equality. Notably, Latin, Middle Eastern, and Asian cultures place women in subordinate roles, with harsh punishments and social outcasts, often resulting in women trying to establish themselves... ... middle of paper ...... but the coin is a symbol of strength. It is an escape from the reality of a masochistic society. Separated, the women must face trials alone, but together, they manage to regain their humanity by becoming “an ocean of strength” (321). “Beautiful Señoritas” is a play that echoes the feminist movement of the 1970s. Dolores Prida brings to the fore the stereotypical views of women in a masculine society. “What a dangerous and deadly adventure it is to be a woman!” » (320) The women in this play recognize the different roles they must play, as well as the suffering they must endure. Through this common bond of humanity between women, they are able to grow within a community outwardly expressing their vulnerability to one another. This group of women is an ocean of community: one that symbolizes strength, courage and honor..
