Multiculturalism has been a subject of concern in the United Kingdom in recent years, as it has become a very cosmopolitan country. There are many different opinions on this subject from different people like politicians, journalists, professors specializing in the subject and even artists. And these opinions are expressed through different media like speeches, articles and films. In this essay we will analyze how multiculturalism is applied in the film East is East, what problems arise in this film and how they can be resolved, going through an in-depth analysis of the causes of the conflicts raised by applying the opinions of critics like Pnina. Werbner and Sara Ahmed. Additionally, Prime Minister David Cameron's views, problems and solutions regarding multiculturalism will be explained as well as counter-criticisms. Multiculturalism is a complex subject, but I think it should be about a common identity for all and the fight against racism. In the film East is East, Zaheed, a Pakistani immigrant to the United Kingdom, tries to force his children to become good Muslims. despite their happiness. Racism and Islamophobia are clearly among the factors that push Zaheed to behave in this way. When he arrived in the UK, he was very open-minded and ready to accept this new culture of the country he was moving to. He adopted an English name (George) and married an English woman, which is prohibited by the laws of Pakistan. A Muslim Pakistani can only marry a woman who is also a Muslim. So, Zaheed, or George, left his identity behind to become involved in British culture. Still, he wasn't ready to be rejected.
