From the very first sentence, the reader can divulge information about the status and personality of the two characters. The line states that Lady Sneerwell is at a dressing table and Snake is drinking chocolate. Knowing Sneerwell's simple activity of sitting in front of the vanity, it is easy to assume that the woman may be vain or very focused on her physical appearance. In response to this hypothesis, one might say that she may treat those she considers physically unattractive as being “not worthy” of her. At first glance, the reader or audience would view Lady Sneerwell as a snobbish woman of high status. As they watch the scene, they find Snake sipping chocolate. In the past, chocolate was reserved for the rich. It seems that Sheridan wants the reader to immediately understand that his superior status is most important. Once the two characters begin their dialogue, the reader is vaguely informed of what is happening. They can make guesses, but some things can be inferred with certainty.
