Essay / Theories of Psychosocial Development - 634
Psychosocial Stage 1 – Trust or DistrustThe first stage of Erikson's theory of psychosocial development occurs between birth and one year of age. The infant is unsure of the world. When they see that someone always takes care of them; and care is predictable and reliable, they are safe and gain a sense of confidence. Failure to develop trust will result in fear and the belief that the world is inconsistent and unpredictable. If a child has confidence, he will also have hope. I hope that when a problem arises, other people can be there to help. If they don't have hope, they will be afraid. Psychosocial Stage 2 – Autonomy (independence) vs. Shame (doubt) This stage occurs during early childhood and focuses on the development of personal control and mobility. They will start to be more independent. Like moving away from their parents or picking up a toy on their own. If they successfully complete this step, they feel safe and confident. Those who don't will feel inadequate and doubt themselves. A child who has a balance between these two will have willpower. Psychosocial Stage 3 – Initiative versus Guilt During the preschool years, between approximately ages 3 and 5, children begin to assert themselves more often. They interact with other children. They begin to discover their interpersonal skills through social activity and play. When children find the right balance between willingness to work with others and initiative, they feel capable of leading others and have the virtue of 'a goal. Those who do not develop these skills experience feelings of guilt, self-doubt and a lack of initiative. Psychosocial Stage 4 – Industry (skill) vs. Inferiority From ages 5 to 11, they will begin to read and write, use tools, and do things. When they interact with other k...... middle of paper ......e, they contribute to the world. Those who don't have this will feel unproductive and unengaged in the world. In this stage, you develop care. You will feel proud of the things you have done and will be in unity with your partner. Psychosocial Stage 8 – Integrity versus Despair During old age, you reflect on life. If you look back and are not proud of the things you have done, you feel dissatisfied with life and have a lot of regret and despair. But if you are proud of what they have done, they will have integrity. If you succeed in this step, you will have few regrets about the past and you will be satisfied. They will develop wisdom that will help them look back on their lives and bring closure. Even thinking about their death.
