This career involves tedious work to perform preventive and restorative treatments on teeth. A dentist's primary job is to work with patients to decide on a dental care plan. Dentists will fill cavities, take x-rays, repair fractured teeth, apply protective sealants, replace missing teeth, educate patients about unhealthy foods, and many other tasks to ensure their patients will have healthy teeth (Corner Career Library). Dentists use many instruments like mouth mirrors, excavators, amalgam holders, condensers, sculptors, explorers, perio probes and ball burners to perform these tasks. Dentists are responsible for maintaining a health record of each patient and if they cannot complete the task for the patient, they can refer the patient to a specialist (Basic Dental Instruments). There are many types of specialties in dentistry. Endodontics, orthodontists, and oral surgeons are professions associated with general dentistry, but their work is more detailed. Endodontists care for the dental pulp and periradicular tissues, primarily by performing root canal treatments. Orthodontists correct the skeletal structure of teeth, primarily by pulling teeth and applying corrective orthodontic appliances. Oral surgeons diagnose and treat diseases of the mouth, performing surgery regardless of the problem and removing wisdom teeth (American Dental Association). After a dental hygienist cleans the patient's teeth, the dentist walks behind them and checks for cavities. If there are cavities, another appointment will be made.
