Automatic speech recognition (ASR) began in 1936, with the greatest obstacle to speed and accuracy being the lack of speed and power of computers. Today, most RAM levels are 500 MB and above with transcription speeds in excess of 160 words per minute with accuracy levels of 95%. In the early days of speech recognition, research was funded and carried out by universities and the U.S. government. The Army along with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) were the primary government agencies responsible for researching and funding automatic speech recognition. However, speech recognition programs were not commercialized until the early 1980s (History of Speech Reconnaissance, 1999). In 1982, the first organization to launch a marketable product was Covox. Through Voice Master, Sound Master and Speech Thing, digital sound was introduced to the Commodore 64, the Atari 400/800 and finally to the IBM PC in the mid-1980s. This technology enabled the start of recognition programs voice. Dragon Systems was founded in 1982 and is known for being the undisputed leader in the speech recognition market. James and Janet Baker were responsible for its institution. While they were graduate students at Rockefeller University, they began studying speech waveforms on an oscilloscope. At the time, there were systems that could only recognize a few hundred words, and only if the system adapted to the speaker's voice and paused between words. Due to the lack of speech understanding experts and appropriate computing power, the Bakers moved to Carnegie Mellon University, which was a prime contractor for DARPA's speech understanding research program . Their approach was different from other research...... middle of article ...... Business Source Premier DatabaseChaudhary, RS. (October 26, 2009).
