Essay / Pinke (Pinker's Rules) of the English Language - 1367
This contributes to Pinker's idea that the English language is failing. First, kids don't have the self-esteem to write a strong paper, and from there they won't seek the help they need. Lee Warren states in his article: “The greatest factor affecting the learning of lower grade students is a lack of confidence based on real or perceived weaknesses in preparation” (Warren). Simply because a child is not from the highest class and is mixed with these upper class students, he feels that he cannot learn as well and this shows in his work. This should not be a factor and this is where teachers need to step in with their ground rules that all children should face when writing. Teachers must enforce the fundamental rules and ensure that every child in every class feels equal and capable of being a true writer. Pinker is trying to say “[that] once introduced, a prescriptive rule is very difficult to eradicate, no matter how ridiculous it may be” (Pinker 374). This is completely false. What is needed is for the educational authorities to step in and solve the problems starting with young children and continuing until they finish school, repeating this for everyone.
