  • Essay / Gun Control in America - 989

There are gun control laws in place to try to reduce the number of violent shootings that occur. They are trying to limit the weapons Americans can own. The government is trying to take away our guns mainly because of the criminally insane. Most people who commit crimes don't even legally own guns. If the government takes away the rights of people allowed to own guns, it will certainly cause a scandal. Most people think that people should be more able to continue to use their firearms properly instead of having them all taken away. Taking away Americans' guns would cause far more problems than there actually are. People will be upset to see the government take away guns because of the horrible people who hurt innocent people using them. So they will do everything in their power to keep them. The reasons the government is trying to ban the vast majority of guns is because of all the violence caused by their use. The government's goal is to create a safer environment for the population. This is a reasonable goal, but most crimes are committed using illegal firearms. Banning guns probably wouldn't lead to a big drop in gun crime. The majority of crimes are committed by people who have previous criminal activities. Guns are not the cause of violent crime. The crimes are caused by a typical person with a violent past. Most people would agree that the firearms they have are used either for recreational purposes or to protect their home when needed. So they believe that without guns, they are defenseless. Most will also tell everyone that it's not guns that cause harm.Gun v...... middle of paper......//www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/1598883 ?uid= 3739920&uid=2&uid=4&uid=3739256&sid=21103414003011.Christine Jamieson, Gun violence Research: History of the Federal Funding Freeze, American PsychologicalAssociation.org, February 2013American Psychological Association, February 18, 2014,https://www.apa.org / science/about/psa/2013/02/gun-violence.aspx.Joaquin Sapien, How the NRA Undermined Congress' Last Push for Gun Control, propublica.org, January 24, 2013, Journalism in the Public Interest, February 18, 2014 , http://www.propublica.org/article/how-The-nra-gained-the-last-time-congress-strengthened-gun-laws.Todd Barnet, Gun Control Laws Violate Second amendment and may lead to Higher CrimeRates, Scholarship.law.missouri.edu, Winter 1998, Missouri Law Review, February 19, 2014, http://scholarship.law.missouri.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3351&context=mlr.
