Essay / 1984 Themes in 1984 By George Orwell
Theme• The theme presented throughout the novel is that power is all that is needed to control others. • As Orwell defines it: “Power is not a means; it's an end. We do not establish a dictatorship to safeguard a revolution; we make the revolution to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power” (276) • The Party has all the powers and is able to control the citizens because no one will rebel and if they do, the Party has certain consequences if they believe what 'they are told.• The significance of this theme in relation to the novel as a whole is that power has more influence than wealth; it is possible to control people without wealth. • In our society, power is distributed among people such as employees, managers, and district managers. They each have the ability to control the person below them at work, but that doesn't come into play after work. • This theme is the relationship between reality because individuals do not have power over themselves
