In American society, violence rages across the country, causing citizens to become fearful and discouraged toward their homeland. A major component of American violence comes from guns. In the documentary “Bowling for Columbine,” renowned filmmaker Michael Moore addresses the pervasive situation in America. He argues that gun use in America is linked to recent mass shootings and that America, as a whole, should have stricter gun control laws. Throughout the film, Moore refers to it specifically and employs rhetorical and persuasive devices to build his argument for changing gun laws. One of the main rhetorical appeals he uses in the film is ethos. Ethos is the credibility or ethical appeal by means of convincing your character as an author; in this case, Moore proves himself to be a worthy or appropriate person to advocate for the installation of limitations on firearms. He first explains the importance of guns in his life by explaining that he was born in Flint, Michigan, where the majority of the population either owned a gun or were pro-gun. From his childhood through his young adult years, he focuses squarely on the fact that guns played a very influential role in his life. For example, Michael Moore is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, which means he has completed several requirements and/or tasks to be charged; Additionally, by achieving these goals, they may have changed his views to become pro-gun or pro-gun control. In fact, when viewers of the documentary were told about its members, it was likely suggested that it would be pro-gun and opposed to gun control; in reality, it takes a neutral and impartial stance toward guns and collects data and statistics to p...... middle of paper ......re proven to be a very credible person with his unbiased viewpoint, has shown compassionate and understanding towards people who have been killed by current gun laws and a logical thinker by researching statistical data to demonstrate that there is flaws in current laws. He also shows the viewer that he is a knowledgeable individual with the famous popular culture television show “South Park”. From the beginning to the end of the argument you can find the symbolism and key points that he wants to live in a better America and he does. thus by developing effective rhetorical and persuasive devices to build one's position in favor of changing gun laws.
