Essay / Joe the Scapegoat for the 1919 World Series Scandal
IntroductionKenneth Burke used a process of analyzing certain situations called "pentadic analysis." In this research paper I will attempt to explain a pentadic analysis, what its elements are, and then provide an example of a specific situation (1919 World Series). Then explain some of Burke's key concepts that he developed throughout his life. I will also compare some of Burke's concepts to two readings of Sigmund Freud. Next, a thorough clarification of each of the five terms (act, agent, agency, scene and purpose) associated with pentadic analysis. Then assign each term (act, agent, agency, scene, and purpose) as it relates to the example I chose for the 1919 World Series. I will then attempt to help clarify the motivations that Joe Jackson is using as a goat emissary, by assigning ratios to the terms (agent/agency, scene/act etc.), by assigning these ratios. Finally, I will then identify the most relevant concepts related to the pentadic analysis of the 1919 World Series. Situation During the 1919 MLB season, the Chicago White Sox were one of the elite teams. Many players were previously part of the winning 1917 World Series team. The 1919 World Series has always been a phenomenon for many sports fans, even today. The series started like any other World Series played before. Two very talented and competitive teams playing for what some call baseball's most prestigious honor: to be crowned world champions. But many are adopting the Reds and have received help. What started with a few simple players trying to get rich quick, turned into one of the most predominant and obscure scandals of American baseball's past and present? When the nation was already in disarray, the 1919 World Series scandal caused many Americans to lose their confidence middle of paper......capable of critical analysis, launched Kenneth's pentadic analysis Burke. Next, I explained some of the key concepts from Burke, Freud, and Marx that could be examined and why attempt a pentadic analysis. I provided a brief description and assigned examples of the five elements (act, agent, agency, scene, and purpose) to do a pentadic analysis. I have further broken down a few of these elements by assigning ratios, to provide my reader with additional and deeper analysis of the motivations behind each element of a pentadic analysis. Finally, I presented a brief case of my particular situation (1919 World Series) and the most relevant Marx concept of the system of exploitation in society. By taking into account some of the above mentioned concepts given by Burke, Marx and Freud, I hope that a complete pentadic analysis of "Joe the Scapegoat, of the 1919 World Series Scandal" can be completed..
