  • Essay / Racism in The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

The New Jim CrowIn this book The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander provides an overview of the history of racism of African Americans in relation to slavery and us leads to modern-day racism. Not racism as a form of insulting people or through segregation which would be considered overt racism condemned by society, but through color blindness and through a racial caste system. Alexander argues that African Americans face discrimination in the form of mass incarceration. “Mass incarceration refers not only to the criminal justice system, but also to the broader set of laws, rules, policies, and customs that control those who are labeled as criminals both inside and outside the prison” (Alexander 2012, p. 14). Reading The New Jim Crow, I believe that African Americans continue to be discriminated against in ways that are silent and deemed acceptable by society and the criminal justice system. If you ask anyone why people go to prison, you will probably get the answer - because they are bad people. The counter question would then be how, even though whites and African Americans commit the same number of crimes, there are more African Americans under the supervision of the prison system? “Government data reported by Human Rights Watch found that black people were no more likely to be guilty of drug crimes than white people and that white youth were in fact the racial or ethnic group most likely to be guilty of drug crimes. 'be guilty of illegal possession and sale of drugs' (Alexander 2012, page 99). The Nixon War on Drugs yielded2.images of poor African-American men as the typical drug dealer and user. The stereotype has grown over the years. The war on drugs continued under the Regan administration and was followed by financial incentives for police...... middle of paper ......ers on this topic. This really got me thinking. This book also made me angry. The mere thought that the government tolerated this behavior, even though it condemned racism, made me angry. If more people realized what was happening, perhaps there would be a greater rise in power.4. Although it might be a challenge to have an uprising due to the fact that we are an individualistic society. It's harder to see the problems in society when we only care about ourselves and how happy people are that drug dealers are off the streets. But drug traffickers and users are released from prison. Of course, not all of us are like that, there are those who really care about social issues. But it will be a challenge to make that spark in the fire.5. Works CitedAlexander, Michelle. 2012.
