Essay / In the article "Being an Atheist", HJ McCloskey tries to show that believing in God is unreasonable. McCloskey first attempts to point out the flaws in theism by attempting to refute cosmological and teleological arguments. After attempting to show the flaws in both arguments, he raises the problem of evil in an attempt to discredit theism as a contradictory belief. At the end of his article, he attempts to show his readers that atheism is comforting and theism is not. When you examine McCloskey's argument, you see many flaws in his reasoning, because he wanted to show that it is impossible for God to exist. Throughout McCloskey's article he refers to the fact that theists do not prove that there is a God and therefore should not be used. The problem with this is that atheists and theists should purge most of their arguments because almost everything fails to prove the argument. McCloskey is correct that the "evidence" does not completely establish that there is a God, but it does give us a better understanding of the world and whether there is a God. Cosmological and teleological arguments are just arguments, so they do not completely prove that there is a God, as Dr. Foreman says, "these arguments give us the best explanation" (Foreman). McCloskey is wrong that these arguments should be abandoned because, while they do not completely prove that there is a God, they are "starting points" that need to be better refined to present a more complete argument for of a God. be necessary, such as the God of Christianity. If you were to abandon these arguments that don't completely prove what they were trying to do, you would have abandoned many other augmentations such as evolution. There must be a necessity...... middle of paper ......' In this article he wants to refute that there is a God and he makes many mistakes in his arguments. McCloskey fails to prove his arguments against the cosmological argument, the teleological argument, and the problem of evil because he was unable to present strong enough arguments against them. In the end, all he proves is that theism is stronger than he thought. It is amazing how God created a universe such that we may never know the full complexity of His universe.
