Watson Powers 'Moon Shots' MissionMD Anderson Cancer Center took advantage of the opportunity to attack the cancer epidemic using the computing power of IBM's supercomputer named Watson. Watson uses advances in natural language processing and analysis, which can lead to adopting the mindset of a human being, but can quickly analyze and understand large amounts of data. This is why Watson will be the ideal partner to help fight one of the largest epidemics in the world. MD Anderson Cancer Center plans to fight eight different types of cancer, such as acute myelogenous leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, lung cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer, triple breast cancer negative and high-grade serous ovarian cancer. The task at hand is considered the "Moon Shots" mission, and these projects were chosen due to the fact that MD Anderson Cancer Center has the knowledge, technology and long history to reduce the mortality rate from these cases of cancer. After a year-long process of collaborating with IBM and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, they finally took the initiative to advance the mission toward its goals of testing the Moon Shots mission on these types of cancers . MD Anderson Cancer Center has an expert oncology advisor who will be powered by Watson. What Watson will do is integrate the knowledge of MD Anderson clinicians and researchers to create a treatment plan for patients that would be most effective and safe based on the evidence gathered through standard care in the treatment of patients. Watson will help MD Anderson clinicians develop and monitor treatment plans and may help them become aware of adverse events that may occur as part of the treatment plan. Oncology......middle of paper......g more suited to the medical field. The Moon Shots mission will not only contribute to the progression of cancer patients, but can also provide a wider range of other epidemics in the future. What IBM's Watson and the MD Anderson Cancer Center can provide now will open doors for future use in late stages of terminal illness. This Moon Shots mission is a good start to finding a cure for cancer. This mission will take us one step closer to what is needed to combat an epidemic of this magnitude.
