Essay / Effects of Radiation Exposure on Animals - 1050
Environments are greatly affected by nuclear disasters, especially the animals found in them. Everything changes and everything goes wrong in the environment, and it takes a while for the environment to return to normal. My name is Billy the Bear and I personally experienced the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. One day, just before hibernation season, I was walking through the forest to gather some last minute food to take to my cave, when I heard loud noises. All the birds stopped singing and flew away and the tiny squirrels scurried into the trees chattering obnoxiously. The sky seemed to become dark and the loud noises deafened my ears. I turned around, terrified, I'm a pretty big guy, hello, I'm a bear, but these noises seemed bigger than me. I could hear human men screaming, getting closer. I bounded back to my cave, forgetting about the last minute food run. Sprinting as fast as I could, I jumped into my cave and pushed rocks against the entrance. Completely blocked, I lay down, ready to hibernate regardless of the unexpected excitement of the day. As I slipped into my deep 8 month sleep, I could barely hear the detonations of the bombs falling. 8 months later… As I stood up, I stretched and felt my bones cracking and popping, my muscles protesting. Yawning widely, I pushed the rocks aside and squinted to resist the sunlight streaming into the cave. Leaving the cave, I stumbled back, horrified and shocked, everything I had ever known was gone; the trees were white and stripped of all their leaves. The ground was devoid of any grass, nothing green was in sight. I galloped towards the river, hoping she hadn't disappeared too. Luckily this wasn't the case, however, the river was covered in a strange green slime,...... middle of paper... wondering what was going on. I only knew one thing, I have to get out of here. The humans were right, BE KEEP UP! I slowly left the rock, walking through the trees to find a new home. Without even looking at my destroyed house, I continued walking out of the woods. I saw a sign, another symbol of the miserable humans who had destroyed my home. He said: “Radiation causes fever, headaches and nausea. The number of white blood cells may be reduced. Seek medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms and EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY! They didn't need to tell me twice: once I saw that sign, I knew that everything in my environment was destroyed and that I was suffering the effects of radiation exposure. Sighing, I continued my journey to find a new home. At least I survived the nuclear disaster that destroyed my house, stripping every tree and polluting almost everything..
