As a student, the number of students taking strong medications for ADHD and ADD is shocking. It’s a topic discussed in every class and heard in many dialogues. We frequently hear conversations about how easy it is to obtain medications and how simple it is to get a diagnosis. However, even though I know that a large number of students take prescription medications for ADHD, I don't think I ever realized how much this disorder affects America's youth. It wasn't until I spent my time volunteering as a paraprofessional in a fourth grade classroom that I felt I truly understood the toll the number of ADHD diagnoses had on children of our country. The supervising teacher I worked with told me that in her class of 22 children, six of them were taking prescription medication for ADHD, and that many parents I spoke to tended to ignore the risk factors involved, noticing that the drugs improved their academic performance. I was shocked by this figure, especially since after working with the children, even on days when they forgot to take their medicine, I found that by using different teaching methods, many children didn't seem to have much less problems. focus only on children who did not have ADHD. So when we were assigned this article, I set out to debunk the myth that children who misbehave in school have ADHD and need to be put on prescription medication to succeed in school .
