There are many things to consider when evaluating the effectiveness of a coursebook. In my opinion, the overall user experience is of paramount importance (from a student and teacher perspective). My first reaction upon first reading the “Cutting Edge Advanced” sample unit was to take an aspirin. The sample unit is dense and intense, and it feels a bit like wandering through a maze. But after several slower readings, the points became apparent and the fundamental principles and techniques of teaching English as a foreign language began to reveal themselves. Presented appropriately for advanced learners, the topics and texts are interesting and relevant enough to appeal to students everywhere. Activities and tasks are varied and progressively stimulating. They also ensure that grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are constantly reviewed and tested, requiring students to use all four skills.
