  • Essay / To learn... or not to learn - 1078

Have you ever been a student and you think that the teacher talks just to hear himself talk? Do you feel like you're full of information that you'll never use in the "real world"? These questions have been asked many times and by many people. The school system in the United States evolves from the bottom up. The school system has failed many students due to its teaching methods and also the textbooks that students are forced to use. People like Paulo Freire PhD and Dr. James Loewen have observed countless hours of good teaching and bad teaching methods. Freire observed and wrote about the different teaching methods used, and Loewen wrote about how textbooks only tell us parts of our history. Paulo Reglus Neves Freire, PhD, was born in Brazil on September 19, 1921 and died on May 2, 1997. Paul Freire was well known for his theories on education. His most notable work is “Pedagogy of the Oppressed”. In 1993, an essay entitled "The Banking Concept of Learning" appeared in Continuum. This essay highlights many ideas that current students and alumni have long been familiar with; teachers simply use students' heads as a receptacle for their knowledge. Freire noted many ideas on this subject that are true. Take a step back and remember your high school classes or even your college classes. Some examples of a concept that Freire called the "narrative" concept is where the teacher teaches and the students learn, the teacher gives discipline and the students are the recipients and students. the teacher confuses knowledge with his own professional authority, which limits the freedom of creativity of students. Teaching such as the terro “narrative” concept...... middle of paper ...... people capable of learning. The concept and practice of “problem posing” takes students at face value and allows for a more comfortable learning atmosphere. Another major flaw in the education system was identified by Dr. James Loewen, in which he discovered a plethora of misinformation in many stories. textbooks and other historical objects. America is waking up, we need to learn the right way to teach our education, but we also need to get our history straight before we release it to the public.
