  • Essay / Special Effects in Dark City - 954

Dark City, directed by Alex Proya, is a science fiction thriller full of visually extravagant and atmospheric special effects. The film depicts a metropolis where its inhabitants are always plunged into the darkness of nightlife because the sun does not exist. The city is controlled by aliens known as Aliens, who disguise themselves as humans and are dedicated to researching the human race through manipulation and experimentation. Dark City has a dark tone and comic book feel, which is reflected in all the elements of the film that Proya uses. Working with dark visuals, distinctive audio, abnormal camera angles, and many other filming techniques, Proya allows the audience to recognize that the film is dark in nature. An essential factor in conveying this message is staging. Proya uses mise-en-scène to construct meaning, keep the audience off-guard, and generate a response by allowing them to empathize with the characters' emotions. This is immediately noticeable in the opening sequence of the film when the character of Doctor Shrieber is introduced. During the first few minutes, the audience is exposed to a series of scenes consisting of set pieces that indicate the character's state of mind, emotions, and possibly final fate. For example, Shreiber opens his pocket watch and the camera zooms in to show a close-up of his face. Then chaotic music starts playing and the view of the cityscape is revealed with cars, subways and large crowds of people in constant motion. Suddenly, the hands of the pocket watch point to midnight and everything in the city comes to a screeching halt. Rail transportation and automobiles come to a complete halt and the townspeople fall asleep... middle of paper ... as flying upright, gnashing of teeth, and phlegmatic movements also add to the sense of horror. Their appearance can be described as having a very pale complexion with sharp teeth, and their attire usually consists of long black coats, gloves, and Homburg hats. The clothing and characteristics that Proyas provided to the outsiders help to develop the wickedness around them.
