    SurveyingThe Commonwealth of Massachusetts has many different requirements for people who want to become registered land surveyors. Applicants for registration as a land surveyor need five references; three of these five must be from licensed land surveyors who have seen the applicant's work. The current supervisor should also be a reference. These references must cover the candidate's entire surveying career. Acceptable education for registration as a land surveyor with four years of experience is a bachelor of science degree in surveying or engineering, including land surveying courses, from an institution authorized by the Massachusetts Legislature or a Bachelor of Science degree in surveying or engineering accredited by ABET (American Board of Engineering and Technology), including approved coursework in surveying. Education obtained outside the United States may qualify if a complete description of the program is presented and the Board or an agency qualified to evaluate foreign programs finds it equivalent. Acceptable education for registration as a land surveyor with six years of experience is a bachelor of science or associate degree in surveying technology or civil engineering, including at least 12 credit hours in surveying , or two years of formal study above secondary level. with at least 60 semester credit hours successfully completed, 12 of which must be Board-approved surveying courses. Acceptable training courses for candidates who wish to become a surveyor in training must pass the basic examination as well as a Bachelor of Science degree. A candidate with a degree in a field other than surveying must have acquired the required experience before receiving certification. A candidate for surveyor-in-training certification with an associate's degree or 60 semester hours of acceptable education, including Board-approved land surveying courses, may be certified after passing the basic examination and acquiring the required experience. Acceptable work experience in surveying is a full-time activity. Part-time surveying work performed during full-time study at an educational institution is considered part of the training program and does not constitute acceptable work experience. A graduate of a four-year engineering institution enrolled in a day program or five-year co-op program must acquire the necessary experience in engineering work acceptable to the Council after obtaining his diploma..
