Essay / The Power of Images: Writing a Response Essay - 772
Images. Even this simple word evokes something in our mind at that very moment. What are we thinking about? Photos perhaps from the Google search engine? Perhaps we think of something mystical flying in the air and as beautiful as a bird in the sky. Well, whatever we think, we currently have some sort of “picture” in our mind. Whether we notice them all the time or not, they are everywhere and are almost undeniably impossible to ignore. In J. Francis Davis' essay, he explains how important images are and how they came to be. Since prehistoric times, images have been created in our imagination simply by people's stories. These stories are human knowledge and information and later people discovered how to preserve this knowledge by creating written communication. Davis also talks about the progression of images. To think that it is from stories that written languages were born. Then, with the invention of printing, this became a stepping stone to the invention of photography. Once photography became important, the advertising industry began to flourish. That’s when we realized how powerful images can be. I agree with Davis on his thoughts about people deliberately using images as tools to create these planned emotions in us to fulfill their every whim. It's quite shocking to think that these Meir images have so much control and power over us. One of the most powerful images we see every day is money. Money is a powerful thing these days. Owning a big mansion, Ferraris and Lamborghinis in the driveway, all the latest gadgets and a six-figure salary is great to have in life but it shouldn't be that. There is more to life than money. One of...... middle of paper ...... we should gather the power to decide and change our choices based on what we want and not just what this image culture influences us to do. This image below represents how we should help clean up the ocean. In this image, he shows a plastic bag behind a fish in a fossil, symbolizing the amount of trash in the ocean that harms wildlife. If we pollute the ocean more, this finding may be more common in the future than we would like. It appeals to basic human needs by reaching out to humans to help make our planet a cleaner place not only for marine wildlife, but for all of us, Earth's living creatures. While this is a very powerful and compelling advertisement, it is unfortunately true due to the amount of pollution present in our ecosystem today. As we continue to live in the world, we should all strive to help save our planet and make it a better place..
