Why should adolescent delinquents be given a second chance at education? The New Jersey prison system should allow education in prison as a way to improve our society. By giving young prisoners a second chance at education, they can learn a different way of living without crime and thus improve their future. Psychology and neurology confirm that maturity at 16 and 17 years old is different from the maturity of an adult. In addition, there are various centers in prison that are constantly evolving to expand and improve the education of adolescent offenders. Finally, there are more than 2 million people in American prisons alone. The New Jersey prison system should provide educational opportunities for young prisoners to contribute to the betterment of our society; teenagers are not as mature as adults, prisons are overcrowded and teenagers are better served in other facilities, and teaching teenagers can teach a different way of life, not crime. Psychology and neurology over the past 15 years have proven that the maturity of adolescent prisoners at 16 or 17 is not the same as an adult. Teenagers in prison deserve another chance...
