  • Essay / Harry Potter Original Soundtrack by John Williams - 1269

Adventure, mystery and magic go hand in hand when it comes to the Harry Potter series written by JK Rowling. The books were adapted into films starting in 2001. The first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was directed by Chris Columbus. The Harry Potter story is magical as is; the film needed a little more magic. This extra magic had to be added by the music. Director Chris Columbus chose John Williams to compose music for a promotional reel (John Williams). After Columbus heard the song for the promo reel, he knew they had to have Williams score the entire film (John Williams). Williams created a full score for the film and called it "The Harry Potter Sequel." “The Harry Potter Suite” contains a song for each important event that occurs throughout the film. John Williams adds magic and tells the story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone through his composed music. The film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, opens with a grandiose melody. It's called "The Wonderful World of Harry." The song is performed by a full orchestra. It is a magical, majestic and extremely impressive song. The purpose of the song is to not only get the audience excited for what is also happening in the film, but it also provides foreshadowing of the tone and events of the film. Composer John Williams created this song to tell the entire story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. In an interview, John Williams said that several songs from the entire score were put together to create "Harry's Wondrous World." “Harry’s Wondrous World” succeeds in adding magic and majesty to the opening sequence of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The story begins with Harry...... middle of paper ...... the Quidditch match, the music is festive and happy. “Fluffy's Harp” was a song played with a harp and double bassoon. The double bassoon imitated Fluffy the three-headed dog and the harp continually played a lullaby. “Hedwig's Theme” was a song written for Hedwig, Harry's owl. The song is light and airy. John Williams adds magic and tells the story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone through his composed music. Works Cited Seiler, Andy. "Williams adds musical magic to 'Harry Potter'."
