Essay / An addiction to alcohol - 1890
The influence that alcohol has on those who depend on it can make stopping very difficult and, sometimes, almost impossible. Some people are able to have one or two drinks and stop, and then there are those who don't know when to stop or who need to drink regularly. It's common for people to drink at social functions or during meals, but getting together with friends or family doesn't mean serving alcoholic beverages to have a good time. When a person used to drink one or two drinks and was able to stop, and now has to drink alcoholic beverages earlier in the day and more frequently than usual, they would be considered an alcoholic. Anyone who drinks what seems excessive at first, but seems happy and in control would discourage others from persuading him to stop drinking. After a while, family members and loved ones begin to notice signs that the alcoholic cannot hide and they begin to notice that there is a problem. Trying to get the alcoholic to see and admit these problems can be a very difficult task. Those who feel that they must continue drinking once they start or who feel the need to drink alcohol on a regular basis are commonly called alcoholics. A person who drinks large amounts of alcohol every day may begin to depend on it or become dependent on it.
