  • Essay / I Like That You Are Quiet by Pablo Neruda - 933

In the poem “I Like That You Are Quiet,” Pablo Neruda expressed his unattainable heart that calls out to his beloved. He described his love towards his beloved without saying a word, understanding her feelings from her silence and acting accordingly to make her understand that he cares here. True feelings of love remain the same even if there is no response from the other side. Selfless act just to get a single word out of his mouth or a little smile on his face that makes him happy, and this poem is about that passionate love. The tone of this poem is heavy although it changes a little at the end. . Words like absent, distant, melancholy, silence and death set the depressing tone of this poem. These words represent the feelings of a potentially vulnerable and heartbroken person (in this case, it's Neruda) who is afraid of losing their loved one. Neruda is afraid and sad that his beloved might one day disappear from his life, but he doesn't really know why. He tries to figure out what the reason could be, but he doesn't seem to receive any response from the other side as she remains silent. For example, Neruda writes: “it is as if you were absent / and you hear me from afar and my voice does not touch you” (1-2). He also writes: “And let me speak to your silence” (12). This certainly shows the fact that he is calling her, trying to reach her, but no response comes from the other end. He becomes so desperate that he is even willing to speak to her silently. The heavy tone that is set from the beginning is evident throughout the poem in all five stanzas. In the first stanza, Neruda writes "It seemed as if your eyes had flown away" (3), which certainly captures the feelings of ...... middle of paper ...... "absent". Therefore, the thought could be interpreted as her absence and lack of response making him feel like she is dead and this making him sandy and lonely. Love is something people often realize after loss. When someone has it, they don't realize the importance of it in their life. However, once it is gone or taken from them, they then realize what a valuable thing they had. Then they try to catch up. If they are unlucky, they may never be able to catch up. This fact can be seen in Neruda's poem "I like you to be quiet" and also in our current. Therefore, it is suggested to try to appreciate loved ones before losing them forever.
