  • Essay / Roundup Ready Crops - 1941

As a farmer, many problems arise due to ignorance or dangers. Roundup Ready cropping is one such problem. The issue of Roundup Ready crops is a hot topic right now due to a bit of ignorance and the potential dangers involved. Roundup is a herbicide whose active ingredient is glyphosate (“Farmers Relying on Herbicide”). When Roundup is applied to any type of vegetation, the chemical kills the plant within a week. Roundup was created in 1996 by a chemist at Monsanto, an agricultural company (“Resistance Warning”). This new product would soon be the answer to many farmers' prayers. Now farmers can roam the fields using fewer chemicals, less time and less money. Farmers have come to love Roundup Ready crops, which contain 70% cotton and 91% soybeans. Roundup Ready Crops (“Resistance Warning”). In 2013, Roundup Ready corn accounted for 90% of the corn grown in the United States (Smith). Between 1995 and 1998, a study showed that “the total number of applications decreased by 8% despite the increase in total area” (Carpenter and Gianessi). Roundup kills a wide variety of plants, so farmers could now spray a field just once and that single spray would kill almost all the weeds in the field. As of today, Monsanto still holds the patent for Roundup Ready, but this patent will soon expire in 2015 (“Roundup and Roundup Ready Crops”). Farmers are now beginning to wonder what will happen if Monsanto does not renew the patent on its Roundup Ready products.
