Essay / Edward Koch's Analysis of the Death Penalty - 1581
Pathos was often used in this story to show compassion for the victims involved and disagreement with individuals opposed to the death penalty. In the article, the writer put sentences full of emotion that he summoned to the audience. For example, in the last two paragraphs, he discusses the case of a murder victim who does not help him. At first Koch showed sadness, then towards the end he showed the madness he felt towards those who did nothing to help them. He believes that the group that opposes the death penalty is the same group that did nothing to help. With this emotion, the author was able to make the reader question whether not supporting the death penalty would bring justice to the harmless victim. Although the writer uses a considerable amount of emotion, he does not go to extremes that would make his argument emotional so that the reader loses interest in it.
