The Johari Window is an excellent communication concept to build trust with others and improve understanding between people. According to (Satterlee, 2013, p. 134), “communication is a vital process for transmitting and understanding information”. However, communication is presented as goal-oriented; the end result for the communicator is to achieve this set goal so that the message is considered effective. According to (Darling & Beebe, 2007, p. 76), “communication is the primary means by which any group of individuals, large or small, can align themselves behind the overarching innovation goals of a creatively developing organization ". In order to be aligned with an overall innovation goal, communication must be meaningful by creating verbal and non-verbal messages. Again, the intended message must be understood appropriately with the primary goal of developing a common understanding of the message from the perspective of the sender and receiver. Open dialogue and communication are integral to building a self-sustaining agency capable of accomplishing challenging missions. The Johari Window is an example of an excellent communication model. The Johari model seeks to build trust between organizational leaders and their subordinates. The term “Johari” comes from the names of its innovators, Joseph Luft and Harry Ingram (MindTools, 2013). The fundamental concepts of JohariTwo key concepts lie behind the model. First, trust is built through disclosing information about oneself. Second, through constructive feedback from peers and subordinates, leaders can learn more about themselves and deal with their personal problems or flaws.
