Essay / Character Analysis of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight beheading game and essentially loses his life to protect King Author and ensure Camelot's reputation. In a year and a day, Gawain will have to go to the Green Chapel to return the favor of having suffered an ax blow from the Green Knight. Staying true to his word, Gawain continues to pursue this journey in danger and alone as a noble knight would. His departure reveals the importance of self-sacrifice for honor. “He rode far from his friends, a forsaken man, scaling many cliffs in an unknown country…he fought to the death with dragons, fought with wolves” (Horton 48). His perseverance and endurance are an illustration of his honor, knowing that he could very well have not served his end of term.
