  • Essay / The Overall Analysis of A Good Man is Hard to Find

Over the years, many people have analyzed Flannery O'Connor's story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find," from a way that focuses more on O'Connor's story or the historical context and time period of the story. Researchers who have done so include Sara Kelley (2008), James Nacua (2008), and even O'Connor herself (1963), a year before her death. These “authors focused on its grotesque details” (Kelley), such as the violence, its use of violence to describe salvation. Although Sara and James' analysis of the story is quite recent, it closely follows O'Connor's overall analysis of the story from 1963. No one has ever analyzed the story in any other way , but "the whole idea of grace and salvation" (Nacua) and how this has been represented throughout history. How come no one ever does a psychoanalytic analysis of this story, because killing an entire family, then the old grandmother last, is simply wrong. Someone would have to have serious mental issues to write about something like this, otherwise they might have had a difficult past. Regardless, this in no way justifies writing about killing an entire family for no reason, whether it's spirituality or not. The similarities between the researchers' analysis and that of others constitute the general idea of the story and how O'Connor "uses violence to depict salvation, often through spiritually or physically grotesque characters" (Kelley ), which, in turn, provokes very lively discussions about religion and faith. It also raises the question: Was O'Connor a Christian? earned a reputation as a "writer of shocking and violent stories" (Kelley), things so violent that a single mind could not imagine these stories... middle of paper ....... ): n.pag. in Ozark, Ar: Arkansas Tech U, nd Print.Kelley, Sara.
