Essay / Ten Years Movie Review
At the very beginning, I had heard a lot of people saying that this was a film that should be on the must-watch list. Honestly, I was afraid to watch this movie when it came out three years ago. The reason is that I was afraid that the plot of this film would one day come true. But I finally watched it three months ago because I thought I'd never escape it again. Watching it could help me learn to cope with the situation and introspect. This film consists of five short stories. Each story depicts Hong Kong in 2025 realistically. Additionally, all the stories expressed a rich sense of despair. However, the characters in the stories persist. However, I would like to discuss three of them due to their limited length. He hires two gangsters to carry out the plan. The government official claims to give them a lot of money and persuade them that they will be able to flee to India once the plot is carried out. They mistakenly believe this would be realistic and therefore agree to assassinate both targets (both are lawmakers from the pro-establishment camp). However, these two gangsters fail to shoot them down and are killed instantly. Later, the government identifies these two gangsters as terrorists so that they can initiate the National Security Act legislation without any hindrance. During the Umbrella Revolution, there was triad-like behavior, attacking and sexually assaulting protesters initiated by pro-establishment groups. It could be seen that the Chinese Communist Party would achieve its goal by any means. This is why Hong Kongers were totally afraid of governing from China. Self-immolating Au-yeung Kin-fung, a young supporter who is the first person to be convicted under the national security law and die due to a hunger strike in prison. Shortly after his death, an unknown person self-immolated himself in front of the British Consulate General at the Admiralty. The narrative is interwoven with interviews with commentators analyzing the self-immolation event and providing background information such as China's violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. The most profound part for me in this story is the housewares store owner who sold the oil to the self-immolator arrested at home by the secret police. I recently heard someone say that they hated politics. The Oil Salesman is just a portrait of these people, because even if you hate politics, politics inevitably surrounds you. Local EggSam, a grocery store owner, learns that the last local farm that sells local eggs will soon be closing its doors. He then visits the owner of the farm and realizes that the farm is being forced to close by the government in order to kill local industries. After this, Sam's store is frequently checked by the young Red Guards, because he uses "local eggs" to describe the eggs he sells on the price tag. He wonders why Hong Kong eggs rather than local eggs would be suitable when they are the same things. He then discovers that his son is part of the squad that throws eggs in a bookstore. However, his son, Ming, promised him not to just think and refused to participate in this vandalism. Additionally, Sam then talks to the owner. And find out that Ming still leaks.
