  • Essay / Stereotype - 741

“Teachers told me: “You are stupid. You're going to be kicked out of here. This school doesn't need you. “They looked at me and saw a stupid gangbanger. A child who must be put away forever” (P.40). In Holler if You Hear Me, (2010) Mr. Michie, the author of the book; he is a teacher and works in a school where all his students are mixed in Quincy, an elementary school in Chicago. In this school, the majority of students are Mexican. Additionally, the book is not only about him but also includes the views of his former students. Additionally, in the book, some teachers treat students differently because of their background. Additionally, stereotypes shape adolescents' personalities and lives. It is necessary for teachers to show students that they do not have to conform to stereotypes. Mr. Michie taught many students during his years in Quincy. He met many students who were unique and intelligent in their own way. To add, these students turned out to be something he didn't expect. Additionally, over the years, Mr. Michie returned to his former students to have a conversation with because he wanted to know how and what they did. One of them he interacted with was Hector, he told Mr. Michie about his past and how he dropped out of high school. During Mr. Michie's interview with Hector, Hector told Mr. Michie, "The teachers were telling me, 'You're stupid.' You're going to be kicked out of here. This school doesn't need you. “They looked at me and saw a stupid gangbanger. A child who must be put away forever” (P.40). This kind of gesture that the teacher had made gave Hector something to despise in his life as a high school student. Hector also states, "This other time I'll be... middle of paper... you're stupid." Here is a quote from Mr. Michie before the trial: “One of the things I had tried to impress upon the children throughout the year was the importance of speaking intelligently about the issues that concerned them. » (P.8). What he did to get rid of these thoughts was a trial, to involve everyone in the situations; he wanted his students to express their opinions on the case that mattered to them. In conclusion, Mr. Michie showed the students that even if they are criticized or stereotyped, there are still others who are willing to defend them. , to guide them on the right path. He is the type of teacher who would do anything to help his students. “Gregory Michie expands the levels of hope to cultivate humanity by teaching with love, justice, cultural empathy and imagination.” (Ming Fang He).
