Perfect FamilyIn the 1950s, the family was considered almost perfect and people were looking for "THE" perfect family. Things have changed twenty years later, but we still think of this model family. According to Coontz in "Marriage then and now", many relationships have been affected by the proposition of a deep marital relationship, leaving more unsuccessful marriages than successful ones (12). In the 1950s, marriage may have been more stable, but today divorce is on the rise, while marriage drives the wedding industry. Marriage, family, divorce, it's the cycle that pushes people away from this model family. The reality of divorce is that people try to get out of their marriage as soon as they say "yes," but most of the time the couple does. do not realize that they are not happy because it is almost unconsciously. “Over the past thirty years, however, the long-term trend toward making marriage less central to social and personal life has reasserted itself” (Coontz 12). Marriage has become more of an industry than a marriage, causing the model family to move in the opposite direction. The positive side is that marriage can evolve due to unexpected feelings. Marriage is a union to create a family with children and a supporting job. “Alternatives to marriage continued to multiply at the turn of the millennium, not only for companionship and sexual relationships, but even as a means of raising children” (Coontz 12). Families are separated because sometimes young adults think they are ready for marriage and it ends in divorce which also causes future problems with the ex-couple, even more so if they already have a child.
