  • Essay / Collective Bargaining - 1145

Collective bargaining is the negotiation that takes place between employees and employers regarding workplace rules, working hours, working conditions and wages. This gives workers a positive outlook that shows they have power over the items mentioned above. Typically, collective bargaining is conducted by a union, which provides the employer with an effective way to respond and communicate with workers. This is accomplished through a representative, or spokesperson, employed by the union on behalf of the employee members. Not all collective negotiations are considered good, it all depends on the parties negotiating with each other. For collective bargaining to be successful, unions and their members must reach a better understanding of all aspects and conditions with the company that employs the members. . Concessions must be made on both sides to achieve a satisfactory and improving outcome. Common grounds for agreement include wages, hours and working conditions. Sometimes, when concessions cannot be obtained, strikes may result. The New Deal era (1930s) pushed for the legalization of collective bargaining among several other labor laws, resulting in the formation of unions. Looking back, the results of collective bargaining are visible all over the world. Countries around the world have unions to protect both employees and businesses, and even governments. China, for example, maintains unions to appease angry workers and help maintain government control. Without collective bargaining statutes, how could unions exist? Employees would not have the protection, negotiation skills or assistance needed to find new employment. The Wagner Act also predicted...... middle of paper...... terrible for the common man, which led me to believe it would be a bad decision time. Works Cited Hatch, O., Labor Law Reform – Yesterday v.
