Home Security Systems: Effective Home Security Solutions to Increasing Home Burglary IncidentsName ()Institution ()Security Systems Home Security: Effective Home Security Solutions to Rising Home Burglary IncidentsIntroductionThe Federal Bureau Investigation-FBI (2012) highlights that burglary incidents have skyrocketed 7% over the past decade to reach a record high of 2,159,878 incidents. Apart from the loss of valuable property, burglary often results in physical assaults, increased cases of rape and immense psychological trauma. The increase in incidents highlights that the impact of burglaries is high, hence the need for people to protect their homes against burglary. This makes burglary the most relevant home security issue. In response to the increase in burglaries, most people have focused on installing alarm systems, in the hope that they will deter over 85% of burglary attempts, as is statistically justified. However, as Capel (2009) points out, persistent and increasing burglary incidents show the ineffectiveness of a burglar alarm system as a stand-alone system for home security. Ideally, he emphasizes that people should never use the alarm system as the only home security system to ward off burglars. The burglar's modus operandi rule should apply. This involves evaluating “the things he (the burglar) is looking for, how he gets in, and what he does while he is there” (Capel, 2009, p. 2). Indeed, based on this rule, as discussed in this essay, Capel shows that an effective home security system against burglars should include a combination of security approaches, mainly an anti-theft alarm system, security points 'sealed access and valuables hidden inside the house.
