At the beginning of the 19th century, warfare began to transform into a modern form that would prevail around the world in the following centuries. He revealed the results of technological advances in industry and agriculture, which would revolutionize warfare. To fully understand the significance of the Industrial Revolution, it must be viewed as a century of rapid and drastic change, during which new industrial, technological, and systemic advances were readily applied to the conduct of war. There are two key changes in this transformation. First, there is the rise of a new warrior entity, namely a large-scale army that served to promote the goals of the popular nation-state. Second, industrialization made war more destructive. Industrialized nation-states could usually exert this destructive force decisively when fighting pre-industrial adversaries. When industrialized nation states waged war against each other, one side might achieve a decisive victory, but the fighting armies temporarily caused death and devastation on a new and surprising scale. The logical starting point for a global history of modern warfare is to see how the regions most transformed by industrialization and massive nationalist mobilization affected the world at large in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The latest technologies have made it possible to mass produce weapons with improved precision, power and range. Many of the new weapons and corresponding tactics ran counter to essential concepts of what constituted good warfare, making change complicated and unsettling. Military conditions were constantly changing throughout the industrial age, as new weapons were developed and transportation and communications improved. The American Civil War saw loss...... middle of paper......become more accurate at long range. Repeating weapons were improved, and the machine gun was invented in time for use in the American Civil War. The invention of the propeller, combined with the steam engine, gave rise to a new type of warship and ended the age of sail. Mobile field artillery came into use, ensuring the disappearance of cavalry units until the appearance of motorized cavalry in the 20th century. Communication and transportation systems have been significantly changed. In the 20th century there was such a proliferation of inventions applied to warfare that no list could be exhaustive. The industrial revolution is far from over. The world may yet witness many dramatic changes in warfare as third world countries, which have only just industrialized, become major industrial powers. The impact of the Industrial Revolution on warfare will be felt for many years to come..
