Men made the decisions and women had to obey them. It was the responsibility of men to provide for the needs of the family by carrying out various activities. The expectations were to improve the situation of all family members through the influence and patronage of wealthier people. Men wrote and published household and marriage guides containing home remedies, needlework plans, and incorporated cookbooks. The father and master of the family worked outside the home, like Shakespeare with his plays. Men of society were expected to engage in public affairs in the manner of soldiers, politicians, and other leaders; be talkers and decision-makers. Their life was linked to duty to the state and was aggressive and
