Essay / Wall Street Movie Analysis - 668
Wall Street is a movie that exposes corruption and hides all values, beliefs and other ethical philosophies. Throughout the film, Wall Street shows how ethics adapt to a person's personality through power and wealth, as well as honesty and truth. Bud Fox, a young stockbroker, is looking for a way to make a name for himself. He is determined to attract as many customers as possible to succeed. He later meets a ruthless man named Mr. Gekko and learns how to get to the top through illegal actions such as insider trading. Bud Fox was an honest, lively man with good ethics, but he was later shown what real power was and became greedy for money. The power of greed is fascinating: the code everyone lives by is inevitable once money comes into play. There are five types of interpersonal power; reward power, coercive power, legitimate power, reference power and expert power. These types of power will be used to match relationships throughout the film. On Wall Street, we realize how Gordon Gekko uses Bud Fox for his benefit. In this article I will show the types of powers used by Gordon Gekko and how they are used. One clear type of power that Gordon Gekko uses in his relationship with Bud Fox is the Referent power base. This power stands out because it is clear that Bud wants to become an industry leader. Bud strives for success when he exposes what he is capable of when meeting Gordon Gekko, he instantly moves closer to his goals. There were scenes where Gordon had legitimate power. His knowledge and information made him rich. Bud Fox had to listen to what Gordon told him to succeed. This was an example of Gekko having legitimate power over Bud Fox. An expert power that is a... middle of paper...... to borrow money from his father, which he didn't think he would do. Bud also had a caring relationship with Darien, whom he met at Gordon's when he was going to sign the papers. Bud didn't know that Darien and Gordon had a relationship long before she met Bud. Coercive power allows Gordon to take everything away from Bud, including the woman he loved, Darien. So, if Darien had to choose between Gordon and Bud, she would choose Gordon because he exerts coercive power over her. If she leaves Gordon, she loses her customers. The powers used between Gordon Gekko and Bud Fox play an important role. With these powers, it allows Gordon to be in control at all times and allows him to benefit from inside information. Although the powers that be favor Gordon are also what keeps them together, Gordon seeks to benefit from Bud while Bud needs Gordon to keep the money flowing..
