Guidelines and principles are presented as ideals, but they are easily subject to discretion, bias, and error at any time (Greene and Heilbrun, 2011). The due process model aims to protect the defendant every step of the way. However, the adversarial model of crime control encourages policing and guilty verdicts, regardless of the repercussions (Newburn, 2007). This competition is marked throughout the CJS: "...the more we learn about the 'is' of the criminal process, the more we are informed about its duty" (Packer, 1968, p. 150). For example, few suspects benefit from a competent legal defense, but this is in contradiction with the ideological clause. It may be interesting to investigate whether juries found and recognized injustice during the trials. Too often, ideologies of criminal justice, due process, and crime control result in miscarriages of justice (Newburn, 2007). When rigid regulatory processes breed bureaucracy, it can only lead to increased pressure on businesses.
