  • Essay / Analysis of Benito Cereno - 653

"Benito Cereno", written by Herman Melville, is a short story that depicts Melville's views on slavery at a time of great political unrest over the issue of slavery (six years before the civil war). . The narrator, Amasa Delano, is the captain of a Massachusetts whaling ship called Bachelor's Delight. Throughout the story, Melville depicts certain situations that draw attention to the ideas of slavery and leadership. “Benito Cereno” is a story that depicts the historical incident in 1805 in which black slaves overthrew Spanish sailors. The film La Amistad, produced by Steven Spielberg, is based on this historical incident. Slave owners are portrayed as brutal human beings who want to sell their slaves as quickly and effortlessly as possible. On the other hand, the slaves want to return home and live the life of an ordinary human being. Due to the fact that many African Americans were enslaved at this time, many revolts took place, often even in extremely difficult situations. In the story “Benito Cereno,” Melville articulates the qualities of the slave and slavery itself throughout this novel. Melville uses disturbing imagery to foreshadow the fate that Captain Delano and his crew will face later in the story. Melville wrote this text in order to distance the reader from what is really happening on the San Dominick. He created this novel so that readers would trust Delano's judgment and observations about Don Benito and his team. The story is written in a mysterious way so that the reader cannot conclude what will happen next. There are many different symbols and actions taking place on the ship that suggest an overthrow of Captain Delano, but as Delano is depicted in the middle of a paper......he developed a high fever on board the ship . and died. Melville portrays Captain Delano as a very naive and innocent man, so he quickly believes everything Cereno says. As a result, Delano consistently rejects the idea that a slave revolt could occur on the San Dominick. He does not hesitate to place his trust in Benito Cereno because Cereno's situation seemed logical to him. We see many clues that suggest a rebellion in which slaves work with axes while being freed from their chains. This is a huge red flag that Delano continues to ignore because he believes what Cereno claims happened to them. The biggest clue Melville provides to the reader is when Babo shaves Benito. The razor that Babo uses to shave Cereno is a very big symbol in this story because it signifies several themes such as power and fear, which ultimately ties this whole story together..
