Essay / The big change in Kafka's Metamorphosis - 942
Although Gregor transformed into an insect, the real Metamorphosis happened before the change and with the whole family. Kafka's short story The Metamorphosis reflects turn-of-the-century ideals of industrialization and existentialism. In the short story, Gregor turns into an insect and the whole family has to deal with it in different ways. Many characters undergo a metamorphosis in the short story. Although the changes may not be physical, the changes have occurred significantly in Gregor, Mr. Samsa, and Grete. Gregor's major transformation didn't happen when he turned into an insect, but through the changes in his life. Gregor's life before he turned into some kind of insect was like that of a bumblebee. He would go through life doing what others told him. In the story, Gregor says, "For the moment, however, I have to get up because my train leaves at five" (Kafka 4), which explains that he was just someone who lived by a schedule, just like a worker bee. But even before being a traveling salesman, he was someone else: “On the wall directly opposite hung a photograph of Gregor dating from his military service” (16). He was a soldier, so at that point; he has already gone from a soldier to a boring worker in a modern industrial world. The biggest change that happened to Gregor was his appreciation for music. Previously, Gregor barely noticed his sister's violin playing, but at the end of the story he says, "Was he a beast if music could move him so much?" He had the impression that the path to his unknown hungers was opening up” (49). Gregor has never been more grateful to music in his entire life, but the changes he has gone through have emerged with a newfound indulgence towards it. The obvious hypothesis regarding Gregor's metamorphosis...... middle of paper ..., she felt strongly towards her brother, and she loved him, but in the end, the biggest change in the story s is produced. “He has to leave… it’s the only way… we don’t have a brother… he obviously wants to take over the whole apartment” (53). She wanted to kill her brother, because of the work and the pain he brought to the family. She even went so far as to say: “We have to get rid of it” (52). In conclusion, the biggest change in the short story is from a kind and loving sister, to a murderous human, who no longer has a brother. Although Gregor may seem like the only one to have undergone a transformation, his entire family was along for the ride. . What if everyone looked at their own life that way, and instead of turning into a bug, it changed slightly. What effect would it have on your family if you woke up a different person?
