  • Essay / Academic performance in Australian first year...

Krause, K. & Coates, H. (2008). Student engagement in the first year of university. Assessment in Higher Education, 33(5), 493-505. Retrieved August 13, 2010 This article was written by two authors: Kerri-lee Krause and Hamish Coates. The article is aimed at Australian students during their first year learning experience. The authors used data collected as part of a national study. These data represented seven dimensions of engagement with college and the environment, and the dynamics of the distribution of these ideas among all college first-years. The article emphasizes that education consists above all of students defining and thus constructing their own knowledge. This is based on research carried out with a number of first year university students. The article highlights that learning is the product of a number of factors such as the universities themselves and the nature of the staff. These are some of the conditions that influence student learning. Additionally, the article took more into account the types of engagements students find themselves in. He asserts that it is not only academic factors that contribute to learning, but that some social factors are helpful. The article is well written. Moreover, it is comprehensive for a learner who has prior knowledge of what happens in educational institutions. However, the article focuses on particular academic issues, leaving aside some social concerns of students. This article helped me understand the nature of engagement and learning that takes place in Australian universities. Krause, K.L et, al. (2005).
