  • Essay / autonomy - 1083

    1. Introduction As education moved towards more humanistic approaches in the late 1960s, following Roger's proposal to focus on learners, based on empathy, concern for learners' needs and authenticity, and a shift in the role of teachers from teacher as authority to teachers as facilitator, new concepts such as learner-centered teaching, power and student autonomy have evolved and have replaced old teacher-centered teaching methods. Therefore, autonomy, once considered a buzzword (Little, 1991), has become a discriminating characteristic of a good language learner, to the extent that Lu Tung-lai defined it as an outstanding characteristic of a good language learner (Benson, 2001). In its definition; cited by Benson (2001); Lu Tung-lai encourages critical thinking and the search for truth by asserting that “young people who memorize a large amount of information should not be admired; however, he who thinks carefully and diligently pursues the truth is to be admired” (p. 5). This statement is also consistent with the beliefs of opponents of the “banking concept of education” (Freire, 1970), who criticized the role of students as “receptacles” filled with the teacher's knowledge. From all this, it can be inferred that a certain degree of learner autonomy is vital in education with the aim of dealing with successful, lifelong learners who will seek knowledge and reflect. Leni Dam (1995) critically defined autonomy as the willingness to take charge of one's own learning in service of one's needs and goals. However, the common understanding of autonomy, as evidenced in the literature, is a capacity and willingness to act. independently and in cooperation with others as a socially responsible person, who characterizes......work environment......g and learning practice and measures results in terms of student achievement and increase their skill level. Thus, the aim of the current research is to apply the theoretical principles of learner autonomy in the actual practice of language learning in online environments with the aim of observing the effect on the level autonomy and communicative competence of students. Hopefully, this study will contribute to the practical application of the concept of autonomy in online education, with the aim of improving the quality of learning by training autonomous learners. In other words, as the title suggests, the present study will aim to explore the possible benefits of applying the principles of language learner autonomy in online language teaching and learning in the supposed goal of creating independent learners using technology..3.
