Delancey Street was founded by Mimi Silbert and John Maher in 1971. It was a very small organization that started with just four residents. A loan of $1,000 made it possible to financially keep this project alive. The goal was to change the lives of these people who are poor, struggling with drug addiction and/or in need of a second chance in society. It was a positive contribution to humanity that changed the lives of many people. It started with a small apartment in San Francisco. John Maher was a former criminal and Mimi Silbert had earned a doctorate in criminology. The idea was for everyone to “do their part” and contribute to the foundation. For someone who knows how to cook, they will have the opportunity to become a chef. If a person was good at building things, then they had the opportunity to become the “construction boss”. People were able to bring their gifts and talents together and create an organization that would enrich themselves and others.
