    Deviance is defined as divergence from cultural, social or behavioral norms. Deviants are people who demonstrate discrepancies fitting the definition above – those who participate in antisocial actions, violate laws, abuse drugs and are violent. This is not to say that deviant status is limited to violent, criminal, or antisocial people. Etiquette can also mean deviating from the social norms of a specific area or social group. Additionally, choosing to adhere to particular religious beliefs, sexual preference, or alcohol consumption is perhaps deviant when it does not fit the standard customs of the given context. Furthermore, the sociological perspective implies that "deviance can only be defined in context." presence of rules” (Freed, 2011). Deviance, as such, is the extent to which certain regulations are applied to behaviors.
