Essay / Pass to Play - 1035
This is a quote from USA Basketball Hall of Famer William Warren Bradley. With this quote in mind, think about this question; Should high school athletes take mandatory drug tests to participate in sports? I think the answer is yes. I believe that sport is a privilege and not a right. By choosing to be a part of an athletic program, you are signing up to be a role model for the students around you. You reflect not only yourself, but also your school, your community, and, on some level, your parents and family. There are many reasons why I believe all high school athletes should be drug tested before playing. One of those reasons is this: drugs are illegal, plain and simple. By abusing drugs, you are breaking the law as well as your school's code of conduct. High school is sort of the gateway to adult life, and in the adult world, you take a drug test. It makes sense to drug test student athletes because the day you signed up for a sport, you committed to following the rules, on and off the field. Schools have drug policies in place, but there is no monitoring in the system. You tell a teenager not to do drugs and they will hear you, but ultimately telling them to "say no" won't actually stop them from going out and doing drugs. From elementary school, when the police brought drug dogs to school, we understood that drugs are bad for your health, that they are evil and illegal. But nothing is done to stop teenagers from choosing to take drugs, there are no real consequences because most of the time they won't get caught. By making drug testing a mandatory and regular thing for student-athletes, it will serve as a deterrent and send the message... middle of paper ... the school will know who needs help and treatment. The school can intervene early and put that athlete back on the path to a brighter future, not a dark, sick, medicated future. The fourth reason I believe high school athletes should be drug tested is that by allowing teams to have players who drug, you are sending the message to the rest of the student body that drugs are acceptable. And also, by removing athletes who have a drug problem from the team, you allow other students who do not abuse drugs and follow the rules to have a chance to play without risking losing playing time. for the benefit of someone who does not have one. be allowed to be on the team if drug tests were conducted. These are four very important reasons why I believe all high school student athletes should take a mandatory drug test in order to play a sport for school..
