Essay / How does human activity affect coral reefs? - 711
What is the impact of human activity on coral reefs? For a long time, human overconsumption has depleted the Earth's resources and, as a result, led to the extinction of all species important in all ecosystems. Coral reefs are a major component of the ocean and its marine food chain. Much like many other ecosystems, the health of coral reefs in general is in decline, for many reasons. Some reasons include, but are not limited to: CO2 emissions, overfishing, blast fishing and pollution. Coral reefs once again constitute one of the most diverse and yet fragile ecosystems on the planet. They are also considered by many marine biologists to be “the rainforest of the oceans”. Not only are reefs important to species native to them, but they also protect species living near coral reefs. Declining health will harm not only ocean species, but many land creatures as well. The effects of overfishing have broken or will break the food chain. Causing cases of over/undergrowth in many species linked to coral. But on the other hand, there are many organizations dedicated to protecting environments threatened by human activity. In all tropical countries, corals are being physically damaged due to the increasing number of tourists traveling to tropical countries. In Southeast Asia alone, the number of tourist visits between 1996 and 2012 increased by more than 50 million. The increasing number of tourists and tourism activities in tropical islands has led to more direct and physical damage to corals. “Tourist activities, such as snorkeling and scuba diving, can damage coral reefs if not carried out responsibly.” By doing these things, many tourists do not consider the harm they are causing to the coral...... middle of paper ...... environment if their decision threatens to take money away from big fuel companies fossils, which in turn will stop giving money to the Politian.Works Citedhttp://water.epa.gov/type/oceb/habitat/coral_index.cfm http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/kits/ corals/coral07_importance.html http://www.usfunds.com/media/images/investor-alert/_2013/2013-06-28/China-Robust-Growth-Southeast-Asia-06282013-LG.gif http:// right-tourism.com /issues/marine-activities/coral-damage/ http://www.unep.org/resourceefficiency/Business/SectoralActivities/Tourism/Activities/WorkThematicAreas/EcosystemManagement/CoralReefs/TourismsImpactonReefs/tabid/78799/Default. aspx http://coralreef.noaa.gov/aboutcorals/values/tourismrecreation/ http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090309162125.htmhttp://oilprice.com/Energy/Crude-Oil/Big -Oil-Funding- Politics-US.html
