Designer BabiesInsert NameInstitutionDesigner Babies Designer babies are defined by the Oxford Dictionary as those whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected through genetic engineering, combined with in vitro fertilization , to ensure that particular genes or traits are either included or excluded in the baby. This process involves fertilization of the egg by sperm in a test tube located outside the mother's uterus and alteration of the genes (Masha, 2009). The process of screening children for traits and characteristics is also called pre-implementation genetic diagnosis (PGD). The process involves checking the embryo for genetic defects before it is returned to the mother's uterus. The goal of the process is noble because it generally aims to eradicate genetic disorders and diseases (Yin, 2005). However, the question of when the human race will set the limit on gene alteration is a major issue. Who will prevent rich families, because it is an expensive procedure, from using this method to modify the genes of their children and give them an advantage over other children? The debate over designer children is a raging debate, with more concerns aimed at circumventing nature in how it might change society as we know it today (Ronald, 2007). However, like any other technological advancement, it must be monitored and controlled effectively and closely to ensure that it is not used to advantage some individuals and disadvantage others. It should be used only for the eradication of serious human diseases and illnesses. ReferencesMasha, G. (2009).
